How Do You Get Your Veg Box???

Autumn Veg Box

As many of you know, we’ve recently moved.

Where we used to live, our veg box was delivered to our door by friendly Roger, every Friday afternoon.

The boys used to wait, practically by the front door, listening for the familiar, dulcet tones of the Purton House Farm van, as it pulled up, before systematically removing all the veg from the box, covering the hall floor in mud, and declaring their verdict on that week’s selection.

I’ve waited a little while to get to know the local farms where we are now, before deciding which veg box provider to use. So having made my decision, I’ve just spotted that, in the village we’re in, the farm doesn’t do door-to-door deliveries. It only has a drop-off point.

No problem, I thought. I’ll just pop round and collect my box on the way home from work.

Duh! No can do. The office is at home these days. And the village is 2 miles from one end to the other and we’re at one end, so a village drop-off point could be round the corner or an hour’s walk each way (imagine the speed with the little ones in tow). And it suddenly occurred to me that lugging a box of veggies across the forest tracks with a 3 year-old meandering and the toddler in the pushchair or the back pack is a big ask!

So the only option would be to get in the car, to make a round trip of less than a couple of miles, risking the boys falling asleep too close to bedtime, in order to collect our order.

Seems madness!

I guess I had been so used to having my veg box delivered or being “out at work” and picking it up in the evening, that it didn’t occur to me that local drop-off points can be such a challenge.

Not sure what the answer will be on that one.

But it got me wondering whether any of you face similar challenges?

How do you get hold of your veg box?

What’s working? What isn’t? Does the “getting” of the veg box put you off from ordering one?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks,

Clare

Hi
I’ve just started with Veg boxes. Mine will be delivered though – hurrah!!!
Every Thursday – Boo
I only work away from home for 5 hours a week and 2 1/2 of them are on a Thursday. Guaranteed it will come when I am out either on school run/working/walking the dog.
BUT I have to give them an alternative for when I’m out – guess they’re a bit wise these days and dont expect us to be in all day.
So they have detailed instructions on where to leave it.
Really looking forward to it but this week I’m getting Squash/Marrow/Avocado and am busy searching for recipies that will suit DH and DD.

Mine is delivered which is great except when it doesn’t get to us because the relief driver leaves it at the wrong house :-(
I’m actually just in the process of switching schemes as i’ve found a scheme 1 mile up the road rather than 30 miles so trying them out to cut down on the food miles!

I’ve also recently changed supplier from one that’s 40 miles away to one only 4 miles away and grows most of it themselves – the selection’s much better and the quality is wonderful – on top of cutting down the food miles! I work full time (teaching) so the delivery man leaves the box in my greenhouse – no problem! He was relieved to meet me during the hols as he wasn’t sure he was delivering to the right house!!

Hi Clare,

I can see why they might have set up the drop off point – it’ll probably save them time and money. Although it’s probably not all that good for the environment if everyone goes to collect by car. My personal opinion is that it’s much better for one person to deliver to all houses.
