This will be no practical help, but my 3 year old used to go to bed at 7.30 pm and sleep the clock round. Suddenly he started waking at 6am (or earlier) and playing (loudly!!). This is not so bad during the week, but is a killer at weekends. We tried everything to make him sleep in - later nights, cutting out the midday nap, long walks, tons of fresh air etc. etc. Nothing worked, for about 2 months (felt soooo much longer..). Just this week, tho', he has reverted to the 12 hour sleep - I've even had to wake him up for nursery twice!! Anyway, what I wanted to say was that kids seem to do this sometimes. Maybe a break in routine, excitement (Christmas build up), new baby etc. So sometimes they just fall back into their usual pattern - just try to remember this isn't going to go on forever!
